What went wrong with our Technical and Vocational training? Is it our curriculum, training culture, low value attached to such training, or lack of appropriate information? In Kenya, the large number of primary school leavers cannot be accommodated fully in the available vacancies in the secondary schools. Some of those who cannot proceed to secondary school may join the micro-small scale enterprise while the remaining are expected to join the youth polytechnics for skill development. However, a trend seems to have emerged where the YPs in the recent past have recorded low enrollment. This research aimed at carrying out a comprehensive investigation of the factors that may have led to low enrollment patterns in youth polytechnics in Kericho, Bureti and Bomet districts. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 180 YP students, 63 instructors, 90 parents, 90 YP graduates and 90 youths not enrolled from the neighborhoods of YPs. 18 YP Principals and 18 Deputy Principals were selected for interview. This gave a sample of 513 respondents. The study was both quantitative and qualitative. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews, discussions and observations.

In January 2003 the Kenyan government implemented Free Primary Education (FPE). The launch of the programme saw an increase in enrollment in primary schools which put pressure on learning resources. The FPE policy envisaged that the government would provide teaching and learning materials to all public primary schools that posed a challenge on the management of the learning resources. The purpose of the study from whose findings this book originated from, therefore was to evaluate FPE policy on the utilization of learning resources in Bungoma East District of Bungoma County. The book discusses the findings of the study that established the attitudes of the stakeholders, assessed how the resources are evaluated for effectiveness of the instructional process, teacher preparedness and difficulties experienced in implementing the policy on acquisition and utilization of resources in primary schools. This work originated from the masters degree thesis at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

The UNCRC,1989, OAU 1990 and the government of Kenya in the constitution (2010) recognizes the right of every child to a standard of living adequate to its physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development. Adequate and appropriate care to young children should be provided by caregivers since developmental deficiencies that occur during this stage are difficult to reverse. Early childhood development education centers have been accepted by contemporary societies world wide as an alternative childcare system. Research findings in Kenyan ECDE centers have identified inadequate nutrition and health support services as one of the challenges facing ECDE. Significant disparities in access to education and school enrollment exist and therefore expansion of current school feeding efforts is necessary. This book uses research based pedagogy to enlighten stake holders like the ministry of education, policy makers and interested parties on the need for financial support of the school feeding programmes to enhance learners' class participation.
